Learning Theories

Motivation and Learning

Nowadays, there are lots of the new ideas, application and technologies are being created day by day. It is obvious that we are not capable of having all the skills that matched with those new stuffs. Thus, just like James mentioned in post learning theories should be followed with motivation, ”

  1. the need to learn a new skill or solve a current problem
  2. the sense that it is something we will enjoy or be good at
  3. an interest or curiosity about the topic” (Motivation and Learning, 2020).

I am an Economics students, but I am always craving for learning more about the online learning and creating some interesting topics. Therefore, I need to share a personal experience with the motivation in online learning and making.

Share a story about your best learning experience (could be a formal course or something more personal). Why did you enjoy it?

Last year, I took EDCI337 and EDCI339. Both of them were online classes. Without teaching face to face, teachers would try to create more interactions between the learners and teachers. For example, while we watching a short video that was made by the teacher as a recorded lecture, they may add some of the pop-up quizzes and questions to be more attractable and it would be easier for them to give out the feedback while we finish watching videos. Based on the interactions, this would be more like ‘behaviourism’ way of learning theories, it was new and unique to me before I was attaching to those courses.

Besides, talking about the constructivism, in EDCI337, we were asked to make a game which contains a specific learning topic; and while we learning theories but we also playing games at the same time. “Each individual’s mental representation of knowledge is flexible and open to constant change” (Learning theories, 2020). This project could be done in various way, because nobody is generating ideas in a same way. I made a game based on the Ming Dynasty, and some of the interesting concepts that I would like to introduce to peers, because it would show to others. However, I did not come up with the ideas by myself, I used previous learning experiences, then, I overcome with the game.

What I have learned from the past experience, motivation is one of the key elements in learning a new skills; however, success could not be done without practices and own thinking.

Hi Iris, thanks for sharing us your story. I agree with you that compared with face to face teaching, online classes need more interaction between teachers and learners, because teachers cannot completely grasp the learner’s progress. In addition, I am interested in the game you made. I believe it is a great idea to incorporate knowledge into the games. Learning can be done easily and in fun.
